Subject: Question from email - Clutch Chatter Noise

Fountain Inn, SC United States
We occasionally get questions from riders via email. Here's one from a Ron Murray:

----------------------
Looking for help on chatter noise coming from
transmission area during my first few miles after
start my cross country tour. As I pull bike out
you let the clutch out the chatter noise starts
and as I am going down the road I pull the clutch
in and the noise goes away, let clutch out after
shifting the chatter is back. I have read that
this could be the Torque compensator? This has
done this day after day. took to dealership and
they had bike for 4 days and say they could not
replicate the noise..I have this on video/audio
and my wife has been on bike also and questioned
the noise. I ned to know if you have other cross
country riders with same issue? My extended
warranty through Polaris told me to pay out of
pocket for repairs to have a safe ride! 2013 cross
country tour 10537 miles. Please let me know if
you have any ideas or help.

Any of you have some info/answers for Ron?

One thought: Could be you're lugging the engine too much. Try a higher rpm when starting out and when switching to a higher gear. The email doesn't mention if it is doing it when slowing down. Jeff, can he post the video somewhere so the members could see it and give a more definitive answer? Some newer riders think that you can shift these bikes like Hardley's, but that is not the case. Our bikes take a good bit more rpms to shift properly and one could easily become lazy about running the rpms up enough to prevent lugging. I know a lot of times I'm bad about it when shifting to 6th because it puts the bike at about 70mph if you use the correct rpms.
