Ok, I have over 20k on my Vision and the brakes seem to be doing ok. My Vegas is a different story, since it eats rear brake pads every 5k miles.

What kind of mileage are you guys seeing before you replace the pads, and how hard is it to replace the rear set?

I had about 34k on mine, and still had some room. Replaced front and rear before a big trip, but probably had 1-2 thousand miles left. Still had a small 'groove'.

I replaced my front brakes, which wasn't too bad. Took me about 3hrs.
The rear - I was having the back tire replaced and asked how much to throw in new pads if I provided them. Best $10 I ever spent.

I replaced the tires at around 17k so I replaced the brakes at the same time. To my surprise they were only about 1/2 worn. I am keeping them to put back on when the new ones wear down. I am at 36k now and the new ones are only 1/2 worn. So, it looks like I will be getting between 34~38k miles per set. Take into account I pull a trailer 2 days per week.

The brake pads are not hard to replace. The front are real easy and you don't need a lift. The rear is a little harder to get to so a lift will help. I did front and rear in a little over an hour. That included the time to push the pistons all the way back in a few times to make sure they were not sticking.

I've been getting great mileage out of brake pads on my Victorys-I posted a pic of my Vision pads at 30,000 miles on another thread on the same subject

Sounds like you use the rear break on the Vegas a little to much.
Front break is applied first then rear break.
If you ever lock up that rear break you will go into a slid and then down.
Easy up on the rear break by down shifting more maybe

No offense, and I'm not trying to stir anything up, but if it took you 3 hours to replace your brake pads, you are doing it incorrectly. It really should take no more than 5-10 minutes per disc. With experience, less than 5 minutes per disc.

No offense taken. Heck, it takes me 5-10 min just to get out of the couch!

I figure the time from 'Honey, going to do the brakes' to 'Glad that's done'. Printing instructions from manual, gathering tools, moving car from garage to make work space, setting up portable bench, getting a beer, laying out & inspecting new brake parts, figuring out caliper layout, remove caliper, clean all parts, install new parts/pads, reinstall caliper, setup/torque everything, get another beer, do other side, bleed brakes, clean all tools & floor, put everything away, wash up, have victory beer for job well done!

30 min setup
1 hr to do first side
20-30 min for second side
30 min bleeding
15-30 min cleanup

Ah. My procedure is different.

Slide ATV lift under bike and elevate = 1 min.

remove and replace pads from left side front (caliper does not come off) 5 mins

repeat for right side front (again, caliper stays in place) 5 mins

remove and replace pads from rear 5 mins. again, caliper stays in place

Pump brakes back up after having spread them a little prior to the pad removal. All reservoirs remain closed. No air introduced, no bleeding necessary.

Drop bike back off of lift (10 seconds)

Done.

I have 20K on mine and they are think but not over. I am going to replace them this winter as well as the front fork oil, maybe toss a supercharger in there while I am at it.

Nope, it is a problem with the Vegas. Most of my stopping is on the front brake.

We think the problem has to do with the location of the brake line being so close to the exhaust, causing the fluid to expand slightly, thus the rear brake drags a tiny bit when the bike gets hot. Mine is an 03 and I know the problem continues up to 05, but I don't know if they rerouted the line on newer bikes.
