Subject: "Blipping" the throttle

North Billerica, MA
Here is my rant:
I was riding with my brother who has a Honda 1100 Shadow Ace. Whenever he would change gears or slow down he would "blip" or "burp" the throttle. This was especially annoying at red lights.

I asked him why he does that and his answer was "he likes the sound".

I calmly explained that the only reason I know of to blip the throttle is to keep the revs up so the bike won't stall.
Folks that have cams installed some times need to do this. Otherwise just STOP or go home!

Maybe I should lighten up but he is my younger brother.

Does this bother anyone else?

I find that blipping the throttle actually helps when shifting my GL1800. Transmission is a bit cunky otherwise. Kind of like double clutching.

As for the sound, Can't hear the engine anyway.

Ya, because the motor will likely die on you. Victory's do not like to be "blipped". They're too cultured, to tolerate that type of hooligan behavior...

I have never understood the blipping thing. If your bike won"t stay running, then get it tuned up. Otherwise you are just posing as a HD wanna be.

I was taught as a young boy learning to drive a standard transmission that rev matching the engine to the transmission helped save the clutch. I dont do it all the time on my vision but I do it alot and yes, it has stalled on me several times. I find that if you let the engine idle for a second before blipping it never stalls.

I rev match on the shift all the time when coming to a stop or slowing, some would even say I ride it aggressively..........and never in 3 years and 30K miles has the bike died doing it.

But compared to mine, you come up about a lawnmowers worth short. In fact I have as many cylinders as your bike and car put together so there

Actually you are short about 101 CC's (1832 vs 1731) Not a whole lawnmower worth, but a couple of weedeaters and a leaf blower.

Lay off those blippers, they give me something to laugh at, especially when they say they need to do it to shift.

When riding in groups, blipping the throttle is also a nice way to let the bikes behind you know the light is getting ready to change. I have been caught by surprise messing with a radio channel or GPS at a light and appreciated the notification to get ready to move.

For me Blipping is a rhythm and a sound thing, I have noticed that the Vision does not like it, and so far I have not missed it a great deal.

I have used blipping as a warning device for a car starting to do something stupid in front or beside me, so... It my gas Ill spend like I want

When I was first starting out on motorcycles in the early 70s, I was told that revving the engine at a stoplight was a leftover from when Harleys used DC generators. They weren't as efficient as modern AC generators. So, Harley riders revved their engines at stoplights to help keep the battery charged.

Since it's still being done by most bikers, I'm guessing it's here to stay.

There is some validity to that. And it wasn't confined just to Harleys. The charging systems on bikes in the mid 1960s (when I started riding) would not charge at idle. Not even the one on my Honda. You had to rev the motor a little at stoplights to keep the lights from going very dim.

True for the lights getting dim on older bikes but....the modern era bloopers are like the kids who used a whole deck of cards on their bicycles to achieve maximum noise levels. I am not one of those kids.

I am not one of those kids. I agree that it gives me something to grin about when I hear it. Gal pal appreciates me not being one of "them" as well. Cool chicks know what's right and what ain't if they're old enough.
