I have a difficult time reading the oil level off the dipstick, especially when the oil is clean.
I use an alternate method to check, I make sure the oil level is up to the start of the threaded part of the case.
Has anyone else used this method?

Based on my dipstick that is to much oil and will cause you problems. I agree that with the plastic dipstick from Victory I don't like the reading but I have bought three sticks for three bikes from Franklin Ames not only is it easy to read it looks a lot better on the bike and he is great to deal with. I have bought one black with Nuclear Sunset stripes for my son in laws bike, another Black for my buddies 8 Ball and a Chrome and back stripe for my Vision. make a great birthday present. Also to get back to original reason for the thread it will allow you to check the oil and have the correct amount in the bike.

Witch Doctor also makes a dipstick that simply pulls out like your car to check the level without having to unscrew the thing.

Unless you have a ton of miles on the bike or it is smoking, you really don't need to check the oil between changes. Check it before you change it next time when the oil is dark.

Add 4 qts or 4.25 qts when you change the filter and don't worry about it. Over filling and engine with oil will do way more harm than good. Better to run a pint low than a pint to much.

I have the witchdoctor's (King Bagger) center stand. The oil level is higher when I check it on the center stand than when I check it off the stand sitting straight up. I'll rely on the off the stand reading for accuracy.
Thanks for the comments!

you took the words right out of my mouth.  I do not check my oil between changes.  I drain, add 4.5 quarts, run it for a few minutes to make sure there are no leaks and I go.  I'm changing the oil around 2,500 to 3,000 lately, which is roughly every month to a month and a half. I've been doing that since I have had my Vision which is getting up in miles. No smoke, no using it, I drain about 4.25 quarts out at change.

If you can't see the oil on the dipstick when the oil is new\clean; just lay your finger longitudinally along the dipstick; and then you will see the where the oil is at when you withdraw your finger.

Up to start of threaded part?

put the kickstand on a 2x4 and check. If your putting in more the 4 1/2 quars your putting in to much. Take some out. They say if your a tad low your better off

I had a hard time a few years ago buying the victory oil temp dip stick and it was $60-70.. but for $130-$140. I'd learn real quick how to read my oil level using something else...

LOL, with what you've spent on that Rocket, $132 probably in your sofa cushions!

Maybe. But I certainly have more value -vs- money spent in my Rocket; compared to what WitchDoctor is trying to rape people for... with a dipstick.
