Not sure how many people also read TheVOG.net or VictoryForums.com but there seems to be a fix for the XC/XR gas smell. Basically there is are two vent lines from the tank that are joined into a single line under the seat. It seems this causes a vacuum lock that prevents the tank from venting out the lines so it vents out the gas cap instead.

The fix is to run separate vent lines instead of joining them. There are several ways of doing that but I removed the "T" and joined the two bigger tubes together with 5/16" heater hose. Then I added a 2' section of 1/4" tubing to the smaller diameter hose and ran it the same spot. I am probably going to take the seat off again and add a zip tie to the smaller line to ensure that it doesn't work its way off.

I had Elvira out for a couple of hours and didn't notice the gas smell even after filling up. One thing though, I always noticed the smell more while wearing my modular helmet but I was wearing my half helmet today.
