if you don't mind me asking, and if I dare, what is wrong with your drive belt?

Look in your owners book that show you what to look for on your belt.

A rock in the middle isn't bad one on the edge you need to buy a new one.

Last night my belt broke at 55k miles. A thump, then shot out the back. I have always cleaned/inspected belt, keeping proper tension, and never found any issues, so surprised it went.
Books says:
"Replace drive belt and both sprockets as a set if drive belt has over 5,000 miles (8,000 km) of service at the time of damage or failure"

Belt 'cogs' don't look distorted; belt doesn't look stretched, so not sure will need to replace sprockets. Suggestions?

I'm curious boots, how tight was your belt? I know when I adjusted mine to what I thought was the proper spec, the belt was loose when cold. Some would say it was too loose, but I never had issue with it. I'm just curious, because I'm told by Harley riders the belt should be tight all the time.

Our belts should have I think 20mm deflection when cold. Seems real lose, but gets nice and snug when bike is up to temp after a 15 min ride. I took my last bike to Lloyd's dyno and he said mine was too tight.
Also, just an FYI to check your bike after a trip to the dealer. I had my belt perfect and got a rear flat. Took it to Honda dealer. They messed with the adjustment. It was like a freaking guitar string when I got home.

The most recent spec is 32 mm cold with 10 lbs of deflection. The Ness and 8 Ball are 15 mm. Both are per the shop manual.

Hey Kevin,
At what mileage would you suggest replacing it just as a preventive measure. I've got 40k on my '13 and I've got a 4 corners coming up that will put another 15k on it by the time I get home. What do you think?

Although I check it regularly, when I have adjusted it myself I caused belt squeal, so have a local wrench adjust (not Victory) when tires changed. Always seems ok, but just a slight bit tight to me. Guy knows his $hit though. Maybe he is used to HD, but Vic should be a little looser?

Hey Marc,

Is that with the rear wheel off the ground?

Or does weight on the wheel matter with the Vision?

Inquiring minds have to know!

Off the ground and cold. When the bike is ridden the pulleys heat up and expand tightening the belt so tensioning should be done after the bike has sat for a while. I do mine after it's sat overnight. There's a specific procedure I picked up from one of the Polaris factory gurus. If you want I can post it for you. The 10 lbs tensioning device they use is the same one Harley uses so it's readily available.

It's is better to have the belt "a little" loose, than too tight...

perfectly adjusted for tension is not always going to be realizable; since the ambient temperature actually can tighten the belt up more when it's hotter out. What I mean to say (clarify) is that if you adjust the belt at 50 degree's Fahrenheit ambient temperature; the same adjustment will be too tight at 80 degree's Fahrenheit ambient temperature.

This is taking into account the pulleys expanding with operation as well.

This is why I will run mine slightly looser than spec, especially with the temperature swings that we see here in Maryland.

I have almost 80K on mine , still in good shape. And a I agree with what another said here, a little loose is better than a little tight.
