Sounds great, except the part about being in Minnesota. The winters would suck. Seriously.

I would love to take on that job but I am a retired old man, see my logon ID, and I do not have a college degree in anything, although I have lots of experience getting things done by my subordinates in a large company. Taking up the requirements of dealing with lots of customers strikes me as easy as can be. If you treat every customer as you would like to be treated, you will do just fine. It is always a good idea to make every customer feel that they really do matter to you. If every customer thinks they are important to you, they will be your most loyal proponents. The word of mouth that they give you will be absolutely priceless. No amount of advertising can ever reach that level of influencing prospective buyers.
It seems to me the IR department are cutting their own throats by insisting on a college education. It leaves them looking at some kid with no idea what it takes to run something as their first choice. If they hire based on their present criteria, it strikes me that they will have no positive results at all to show after a year or two of the kid being in the position. The kid will benefit because he/she will have filled a critical position in a large company and he/she will probably move on to bigger and better things in his/her next job by listing that in their resume. At least it will benefit the successful applicant in the short term.

Is the college requirement that important or are they using it as a tool?
If a person has a degree it tends to lead to that a person will start and finish projects. Does that mean a person without a degree wouldn't get the job? I would hope not. Being an "old" timer myself, I know of many colleges that give you credit for your experience over the years.
Does it mean a young person couldn't pick up the ball and run with it? NOT
If we look back we can see many older people that don't know shit and many younger people that can do a great job.
If Polaris wants to bring in more younger people maybe the best way is to have a younger person there for them.

From all the people I have met that work at Victory/Indian they are all great people, young and old. Sure there are times I am at Sturgis and ask a question to someone with a staff shirt on that has no idea what the answer is but then I have to remember they hire lots of people for just that week. As long as the person handles it well and then passes me off to someone that can give me the right answer is what's important to me.

Redrider - They should hire you for Sturgis. You've always been a great spokesman for Victory and have an in depth knowledge of bikes and Victorys in particular. And as you have demonstrated whenever we are on a roadtrip, you can talk to anybody. Repeatedly.

The degree requirement is typical for professional positions these days but it generally is used as a guideline even if it is posted as s requirement. It helps weed out many "wannabe's". If the candidate has equivalent or better experience, hiring managers can make the ultimate decision and overrule HR boilerplate reqs. That said, if two candidates have the equivalent experience and the right personality but one has a degree, then he will probably win out. Certainly there must be some members here that are managers. They can weigh in on the significance of a degree req.
