Hi guys. Newbie question I'm afraid! I keep reading references to "steel frame" models. I haven't been able to figure out which ones they are, and why they are called thus!

Cheers,

All the cruisers are the steel frame bikes, and are called that because they have a steel frame. Hammer, Jackpot, Vegas...etc the Cross bikes and the Vision have aluminum frames.

For the most part, that has been the standard. Victory introduced the cast frame with the Vision. Now it's in the Cross bikes, and Indian has gone to a cast frame. The steel frames tend to flex on the heavier bikes, whereas the case frames are rigid, which is a plus. On a heavy steel frame bike you might get the bike "walking" in a hard turn, the Vision will feel like it's riding on a rail. Of course, everything is also dependent upon the skill of the rider, but I was able to add 10+ mph in the twisties immediately with the Vision. I had an 84 GL1200 that usually kept me a little skittish in the twisties and heavy traffic.
